The UN Security Council voted in favor of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, which includes the deployment of international forces. The US’s 20-point framework was supported by 13 countries, including Britain and France, in the vote on Monday, while Russia and China abstained.
The plan sets out the first comprehensive global roadmap for implementing a ceasefire, reconstruction and interim governance in Gaza. Last month, Israel and Hamas agreed to an initial phase of a ceasefire and the release of hostages, which has now become a formal international mandate.
The resolution calls for the establishment of a “Peace Board” to oversee reconstruction and economic stability, while an international force is authorized to disarm and destroy military infrastructure to demilitarize Gaza. The document says that if the right conditions are met, the path to a Palestinian state could be paved.
Hamas rejected the resolution, saying it did not fulfill Palestinian rights and was an attempt to impose “international guardianship” on Gaza. The group strongly criticized the decision to give an international force the authority to neutralize resistance groups.
Trump described the decision as historic, calling it a major victory for global diplomacy and writing that the approval of the “Peace Board” would be one of the most important decisions in the history of the United Nations.
On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once again reiterated his opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, saying that the demilitarization of Gaza would be ensured “by easy means or by hard means.”
