Ghulam Nabi Khayal Honoured Posthumously with Shamim Ahmad Shamim Memorial Award

A ceremony marking World Urdu Day observed annually on Sir Muhammad Iqbal’s birth anniversary and the Foundation Day of the Anjuman Urdu Sahafat Jammu and Kashmir, was held at a local hotel, jointly organised by the Anjuman Urdu Sahafat Jammu and Kashmir and the Jammu and Kashmir Urdu Council.

The event titled “Urdu Language and Journalism Yesterday Today and Tomorrow” also featured the Certificates and Honours Distribution 2025 and the release of some two books.

The highlight of the programme was the posthumous conferral of the Shamim Ahmad Shamim Memorial Award upon Ghulam Nabi Khayal for his distinguished literary and journalistic contributions. The citation was read by Nazim Nazir, while Azhar Rafiqui recited selected excerpts from the works of Shamim Ahmad Shamim, which were warmly received. The nephew of Late Ghulam Nabi Khayal, Imtiyaz Ahmad Rather, representing the family of Khayal, received the award.

The ceremony was presided over by Justice retired Bashir Ahmad Kirmani. The presidium included Yusuf Jameel, Wahshi Saeed, Advocate A R Hanjura, Saeed Malik and Riyaz Masroor. Advocate A R Hanjura delivered the welcome address. Professor Nazir Ahmad Malik presented the keynote lecture.

A condolence resolution honouring recently departed journalists and writers was presented by Bilan Furqani, General Secretary of the Anjuman Urdu Sahafat.
