The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu and Kashmir State Centre, inaugurated its two day national workshop “Zabaan-o-Bunyad: Empowering Non-Engineer Builders through Urdu-Medium Technical Training” at its Srinagar auditorium. The initiative brought together masons, carpenters, labourers and field technicians who serve as the backbone of the construction sector, alongside engineers, planners, corporate members and academicians.
Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb, while addressing the gathering, remarked that true urban development rests not only on planning but equally on the technical skill and awareness of the workers who build the city step by step.
Chairman IEI JKSC, Er Ferdous Ahad Bhat, in his welcome note, emphasized the urgent need to institutionalize safe and resilient construction practices, especially after Jammu and Kashmir’s recent inclusion in Seismic Zone VI, one of the highest risk categories. He underlined that structural safety begins at the construction site itself, where workers must be fully aware of technical precautions and best practices.
He also pointed to the region’s vulnerability to floods and reiterated the necessity of regular, accessible training programmes in a language workers understand, ensuring that both safety standards and quality benchmarks are upheld at every stage of construction.
The technical session featured experts who blended academic insights with practical relevance, offering participants a well-rounded learning experience.
The first day concluded with a shared sense of understanding, confidence and renewed commitment among the participants.
