Addis Ababa: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Tuesday conferred with Ethiopia’s highest civilian award, The Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, in recognition of his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and his global leadership. This is the 28th international state honour bestowed upon Prime Minister Modi.
Accepting the honour, the Prime Minister said the award belongs to the 140 crore people of India. He praised Ethiopia’s ancient civilisation, its people’s warmth and hospitality, and reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the African nation.
Modi Sets New Global Trend in Car Diplomacy
Prime Minister Modi’s car ride with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed after his arrival drew attention as an example of personal and informal diplomacy. Similar interactions in the past, including with Russian President Vladimir Putin, have been viewed as symbols of trust and close bilateral engagement.
Warm Reception and Traditional Coffee Ceremony
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed personally received Prime Minister Modi at Addis Ababa International Airport. A traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony was organised in his honour, reflecting the deep cultural respect and historical friendship between the two countries.
The visit is being seen as a significant step toward further strengthening India Ethiopia relations and expanding India’s engagement with Africa.
