The Delhi government on Thursday, December 25, launched the Atal Canteen Scheme, which aims to provide nutritious food to the poor, labourers and low-income families at a low cost.

Under this scheme, a complete meal consisting of dal, rice, roti, seasonal vegetables and pickles will be available at 100 locations in Delhi for Rs 5 per plate. The scheme was inaugurated by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on the occasion of the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The Chief Minister said that the aim of Atal Canteen is to ensure that no one in Delhi goes hungry and food is provided with dignity.

In the first phase, forty-five Atal Canteens have been started in various areas including RK Puram, Jangpura, Shalimar Bagh, Greater Kailash, Rajouri Garden, Narela and Bawana, while the remaining fifty-five centers will be opened soon.

Each canteen will provide food from 11 am to 4 pm and from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm, benefiting about five hundred people daily.

A digital token system has been introduced for food distribution and all Atal Canteens will be monitored through CCTV cameras from the digital platform of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board.
