In a dramatic political development, senior People’s Conference leader Imtiaz Chishti has resigned from the basic membership of the party, sending strong shock waves across the party.
The resignation follows what Chishti described as objectionable remarks by the party leadership against Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
In a strongly worded resignation letter addressed to party president Sajad Lone, Chishti asserted that as a Muslim and a Kashmiri, he holds Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in the highest regard. He described the Mirwaiz not merely as a religious figure, but as a towering social and political symbol of Kashmir whose dignity, he said, must remain inviolable.
Chishti made it clear that while ideological and political differences are natural in a democratic society, crossing the line into personal attacks and statements that wound religious sentiments is unacceptable. He warned that such remarks erode social harmony and strike at the core values of tolerance and mutual respect that Kashmiri society has long upheld.
The senior leader said the statements attributed to the party leadership have deeply hurt him and countless others who see the Mirwaiz as a vital religious and moral authority. He stressed that his decision was driven not by personal ambition or grievance, but by conscience, principles, and respect for religious sanctity.
