New Delhi: Sergio Gor formally assumed charge as the United States Ambassador to India on Monday, underscoring Washington’s intent to further strengthen ties between what he described as the world’s oldest and largest democracies.
In a public address ahead of taking office, Ambassador Gor expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for the trust reposed in him, stating that his primary mission in India would be to deepen strategic, political and people to people cooperation between the two nations. He highlighted that democratic values form the bedrock of the India U.S. relationship and would continue to guide bilateral engagement.
Referring to the personal rapport between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gor said the friendship between the two leaders was genuine and resilient. He remarked that true friends may disagree at times but ultimately possess the maturity and political will to resolve differences through dialogue and mutual respect.
His comments come against the backdrop of recent reports in which some U.S. officials attributed delays in concluding a key bilateral agreement to India. New Delhi has firmly rejected those claims, maintaining that negotiations are progressing through established diplomatic channels.
On his first day in New Delhi, Ambassador Gor also took to social media to mark the occasion. In a message, he said he was honoured to join the U.S. Embassy team in India and was eager to begin work on advancing President Trump’s priorities while further strengthening the U.S. India partnership. Expressing optimism, he said he looked forward to a positive trajectory in relations between the two countries in the coming days.
Diplomatic observers view Gor’s early remarks as an attempt to strike a reassuring tone, signalling continuity in engagement while acknowledging the complexities that often accompany a multifaceted strategic partnership.
