Bangladesh has delivered a decisive victory, with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) winning a clear lead in parliamentary elections, paving the way for Tariq Rahman to become the next prime minister. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who took over as head of an interim government after a 2024 coup, has been sidelined in a major political shake-up that has seen public anger against Sheikh Hasina.

The BNP’s return marks a new political direction for the country after a turbulent transition period and has fueled calls for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India to face trial.

Bangladesh’s political upheaval comes amid growing geopolitical competition in the region. India, China and the United States have sought to build stronger ties with Dhaka. New Delhi has maintained close ties with Sheikh Hasina even after her fall, while Washington has openly expressed concern about China’s presence in the region.

PM Modi’s conversation with Tariq

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a statement on social media, congratulated Tariq Rehman on his electoral victory and said that he would continue to fully cooperate to fulfill the aspirations of the people of both countries for peace, development and prosperity. He reiterated his commitment to further strengthen bilateral relations, citing historical and cultural ties.
