Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced that three million households across the country have been empowered with rooftop solar systems, calling it a major milestone in India’s clean energy journey. This development is undoubtedly commendable. It is not just a government achievement but a sign that self-sufficiency and environmental responsibility in the field of energy is now becoming a national priority.

Rooftop solar systems enable electricity generation at the household level, reduce electricity bills and reduce pressure on the national grid. In an era of climate change, increasing energy needs and rising fuel prices, this model is beneficial both economically and environmentally. This move towards clean energy also guarantees a safe environment for future generations.

However, despite this national achievement, Kashmir is still facing a power crisis. Prolonged load shedding in winter, weaknesses in the transmission system and increasing consumption affect the lives of the common citizen. Educational institutions, hospitals, businesses and domestic systems are all affected by this crisis. In such circumstances, solar power is not a luxury but a practical necessity.

Kashmir enjoys abundant sunshine during the summer months, which provides a suitable environment for solar power. Yet, most households are unable to adopt the system due to the initial cost, limited awareness and complicated government procedures. This is where the government needs to play a proactive role.

The state government should introduce special subsidy packages so that maximum households can benefit from solar power. Additional financial assistance for the low-income groups, easy credit schemes, simple registration process and awareness campaigns in rural areas can accelerate this change. If the financial barrier is reduced, the people themselves will be ready to take steps in this direction.

The promotion of solar power will reduce the pressure on the local grid and the need to buy power from outside states. Along with this, it will also create employment opportunities at the local level as skilled manpower is required for installation and maintenance. This move will prove beneficial for both the economy and the environment.

Kashmir’s environment is already under environmental stress. The move towards clean energy will not only reduce carbon emissions but also help in preserving the delicate ecological balance of the valley. Environmental protection is more of a local need than a global slogan.

The success of three million households in the country is proof that when policy vision and financial facilities come together, the people participate fully. Now is the time to popularize solar energy in Kashmir with the same determination. Self-sufficiency in energy is the basis of sustainable development, and this is the path that can lead Kashmir to rid itself of the power crisis and make the environment safe.
