According to the district-wise data, widespread shortages were recorded in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions. Srinagar saw a 64% decrease, Shopian 82% and Kulgam 80%, while Kishtwar in Jammu region saw a decrease of up to 90%.
According to experts, snowfall in the upper reaches is very important for rivers and springs, which are the main source of groundwater recharge and agricultural activities.
The continued dry winter could affect snowpack and water availability in the coming months. He cited a change in the westerly wind system as a major reason for this trend and said the situation was being closely monitored.
