Iran’s Assembly of Experts has announced that Mojtaba Khamenei will succeed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Iran’s new supreme leader. Iranian state media reported the decision on Sunday, according to Reuters.
Mujtaba Khamenei is considered a moderate cleric and is said to have close ties to Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He has long been seen by some in Iran’s ruling circles as a potential successor to his father. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike, which has escalated armed tensions in the Middle East.
Mojtaba Khamenei, long considered a possible successor even though he has never held any official position, ultimately emerged victorious over other candidates. His opponents included religious scholar Alireza Arafi, hardline leader Mohsen Araki, and Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of Iran’s revolutionary founder, Imam Ruhollah Khomeini.
The Iranian Assembly of Experts finally elected Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, taking office after the assassination of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
