Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s Tamilga Vetri Kadgam (TVK) founder C Joseph Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister today. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath to him at a ceremony held at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, while nine ministers also took oath.
Rahul Gandhi and several prominent figures from the Tamil film industry attended the oath-taking ceremony. C Joseph Vijay received the support of the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, which gave him the support of 120 members in the 234-member Assembly.
C Joseph Vijay has become the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu since 1967 who does not belong to the DMK or the AIADMK.
After taking oath, Chief Minister Vijay reached the secretariat in Fort St. George and took office and signed several important files, including decisions to provide 200 units of free electricity to each family, a special unit for the protection of women and a separate department to combat drug trafficking.
The Governor has directed the new government to prove its majority in the assembly by May 13. The assembly session will be held tomorrow where the newly elected members will take oath.
PM Modi congratulates Joseph Vijay over phone
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Vijay over phone on Sunday, after which he took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. During the conversation, the Prime Minister congratulated Vijay on his oath-taking and expressed his best wishes for his new position. Before the phone call, Vijay thanked Prime Minister Modi through a post on X.
