In what will be remembered as one of the most consequential engineering milestones in the region’s modern history, the Zojila Tunnel project achieved its main tunnel breakthrough on Tuesday morning — the moment when excavation from both ends finally meets in the middle of the mountain. The ceremony, attended by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, marked the completion of more than 13 kilometres of drilling through some of the most challenging Himalayan terrain imaginable.

Stretching 13.153 kilometres at an elevation of approximately 11,578 feet above sea level, the project is being built by Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. At an estimated cost of Rs 6,500 crore, it is touted as Asia’s longest bi-directional single-tube road tunnel at altitude.

The significance of this achievement cannot be overstated. The Zojila Pass, which the tunnel bypasses, sits on National Highway 1 between Srinagar and Ladakh and routinely closes for months every winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanche risks. Entire communities — traders, patients, students, soldiers — are effectively cut off from each other when the pass shuts down. Once the tunnel becomes operational, the journey through this sector is expected to shrink from over three hours to a mere 15 minutes, regardless of weather or season.

Beyond civilian convenience, the strategic implications are profound. Defence logistics to India’s northern border zones in Ladakh — areas of acute sensitivity given the India-China standoff in the region — will no longer be hostage to seasonal road closures. The tunnel also carries the promise of boosting tourism, strengthening economic integration, and pulling remote communities into the national mainstream. Tuesday’s breakthrough is not yet the project’s completion, but it marks the turning point from possibility to inevitability.
