Jammu and Kashmir Police, in coordination with multiple security agencies, conducted a full-scale mock drill on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at the Turka Tachloo crossing in Kulgam district on Monday, as part of comprehensive security preparations for the forthcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra. The exercise was aimed at stress-testing inter-agency coordination, communication systems, and on-ground response mechanisms ahead of the annual pilgrimage that draws hundreds of thousands of devotees to the Himalayan shrine each year.
The mock drill simulated a range of contingency scenarios that security forces may encounter during the Yatra, providing participating units with a realistic environment to evaluate their operational readiness and refine their standard operating procedures. The highway, which serves as the principal artery for pilgrims travelling between Jammu and Srinagar and onwards to the base camps, has historically required robust and layered security arrangements given the high volume of movement and the logistical complexity of managing large pilgrim flows in challenging terrain.
During the exercise, security personnel rehearsed swift communication protocols, coordinated deployment procedures and emergency response drills. Particular attention was paid to inter-agency cooperation, ensuring that the various security outfits operating along the highway can function as a unified command structure when the actual pilgrimage is underway.
Officials stated that such exercises are being conducted at multiple strategic locations across the Yatra corridor to ensure that security arrangements are not only theoretically sound but operationally tested. The mock drill at Turka Tachloo crossing is part of a broader series of preparedness exercises being carried out in the weeks leading up to the commencement of the pilgrimage.
The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is among the most significant religious events in the country, drawing pilgrims from across India and abroad. Ensuring the safety and security of lakhs of devotees traversing difficult mountain terrain remains the topmost priority of the administration and the security establishment. The drill concluded with a performance review session, during which participating agencies assessed their response times and identified areas requiring further strengthening before the Yatra begins.
