The repatriation of a resident of Pakistan Administered Jammu and Kashmir who had crossed the Line of Control was hailed as “a message of peace” by a prominent Baramulla based social activist, as the young man was handed over to Pakistani Army officials at Kaman Aman Setu in Uri on Saturday, closing a chapter that had begun over a month earlier.

The individual, identified as Zeeshan Mir, son of Lal Mir, had crossed the LoC in the Uri sector on May 31 this year, reportedly to meet a girl, and was subsequently apprehended by the Indian Army. His repatriation took place at 1224 hours IST, in a formal handover conducted at the Kaman Aman Setu crossing point that has historically served as a site for such humanitarian exchanges between the two nations.

Officials indicated that during his stay in India, Zeeshan Mir was treated with dignity, compassion, and due care, in keeping with the Indian Army’s stated commitment to humanitarian values and professional conduct, even in cases involving individuals who cross the sensitive Line of Control without authorisation.

Commenting on the development, Malik Yasin Hassan, a well known social activist from Baramulla, described the repatriation as a gesture that carried significance beyond the individual case. He said the act reflected a shared desire on both sides of the border for reconciliation, adding that people separated since 1947 continue to hope for a day when families divided by the border might reunite. He further remarked that humanitarian gestures of this nature help strengthen bonds of hope and brotherhood among communities living along both sides of the LoC.

Such repatriations, though not uncommon along the Line of Control, continue to draw attention given the sensitivities involved in cross-border movement in the region. The Kaman Aman Setu crossing, situated in the Uri sector, has over the years become a symbolic site for such humanitarian handovers between the Indian and Pakistani armies, occasionally providing rare moments of goodwill amid otherwise tense bilateral relations.

The incident once again highlights the human dimension of the LoC, where individuals occasionally cross for personal reasons, only to be caught in the complex web of border security protocols between the two nations. Authorities on both sides are expected to continue following standard procedures for any future such cases.
