Mashhad: Iran’s revered religious and revolutionary leader, the late Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, was laid to rest on Thursday in his hometown of Mashhad amid scenes of profound grief, heartfelt prayers, and an outpouring of emotion from thousands of mourners.

His burial marked the conclusion of six days of nationwide mourning and funeral ceremonies held across Iran and Iraq.

According to official sources, the aircraft carrying the late leader’s coffin was escorted under tight security, with at least one fighter jet accompanying the flight to ensure the safe passage of the highly sensitive journey.

Before the burial, the coffin of Ayatollah Khamenei was placed alongside the coffins of members of his family who were killed in the U.S. airstrikes on February 28. The solemn scene deeply moved mourners, many of whom were seen in tears as they paid their final respects.

The February 28 U.S. airstrikes are widely regarded by observers as the flashpoint that triggered a broader conflict in the Middle East, the repercussions of which continue to reverberate across the region.
