The Srinagar district administration has granted permission to the ruling Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (NC) to hold a public function on July 11 to mark the 26th death anniversary of Madr-e-Meherban Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah, wife of Kashmir’s towering leader Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and mother of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah and grandmother of the current Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

According to the official order, a copy of which is with Onlykashmir.in, issued by the Office of the District Magistrate, permission has been granted to Provincial Secretary Syed Tawqeer Ahmad to organize the event. However, the approval is subject to 20 stringent conditions aimed at maintaining law and order.

The administration has categorically prohibited anti-national, anti-social, or anti-religious speeches, provocative banners and slogans, and any activity that could disturb communal harmony or public order. The organizers have also been directed not to use drones during the programme, ensure the event remains peaceful, and prevent any obstruction to traffic or damage to public property.

The order further states that participants must disperse peacefully after the programme, cooperate with the police and security agencies, park their vehicles only at designated locations, and strictly follow all traffic regulations. The organizers have been warned that any violation of the conditions will invite strict legal action, and the NOC remains subject to clearance from other concerned departments.

The event in Srinagar is being held two days ahead of July 13, a day that was observed as Martyrs’ Day before the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into a Union Territory. The occasion assumes added political significance this year in view of the National Conference’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where the party plans to demand the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
