Hindi film “Article 370” has been named Best Feature Film at the 72nd National Film Awards, in a ceremony held in New Delhi that saw honours spread across a wide spectrum of Indian cinema. Chairman of the Jury for Feature Films, Jayaraj, announced that Yami Gautam would receive the Best Actress award for her portrayal in the film, which is based on the events surrounding the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution in 2019.
The Best Actor honour was jointly awarded to Malayalam superstar Mammootty and Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan for their performances in “Bramayugam” and “Chandu Champion” respectively, underscoring the pan-Indian character of this year’s awards. In the non-feature film category, Jury Chairman Asim Kumar Sinha announced that “Bhangaaar”, directed by Sumira Roy, had won the top honour, while the Marathi short film “Hamsafar” was named Best Short Film. The Best Direction award went to Anand L Rai for “Statue of Unity: Ekta Ka Prateek”.
Recognition also extended to film writing and criticism, with the Best Film Critic award going to Sanjeev Srivastava, while the award for Best Writing on Cinema was given for a Kannada book examining the philosophy and politics of Kannada cinema. In the regional and technical categories, Rajkumar Periasamy won Best Direction for the Tamil film “Amaran”, Sanjay Mishra received the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award, and the Best Music Direction honour was shared for compositions across languages.
The awards further celebrated singing talent, with the Best Playback Singer honours going to performers recognised for their work in Hindi and Malayalam cinema, while Telugu film “Chinna Katha Kaadu” was named Best Children’s Film. “Kalki 2898 AD” was awarded Best Feature Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, and “Captain Miller” received recognition for Best Film Promoting National and Social Values. Regional cinema also found strong representation, with Gujarati, Odia, Kannada, Manipuri and Garhwali films each securing top honours in their respective categories.
The 72nd National Film Awards once again reaffirmed the breadth and diversity of Indian cinema, honouring stories that span history, social commentary and regional identity, while spotlighting both established stars and emerging voices from across the country’s many film industries.
