The India Meteorological Department on Tuesday issued a fresh weather advisory forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the Gujarat region, East Rajasthan and Madhya Maharashtra during the next two days, as the southwest monsoon continues to remain active across large parts of the country.
According to the weather agency, conditions remain favourable for heavy spells over Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Vidarbha and West Rajasthan over the next three days. The intensified rainfall activity has been linked to the positioning of the monsoon trough along with moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, both of which are feeding persistent cloud formation over central and eastern India.
The department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds over Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal through Wednesday, advising residents in these regions to avoid open fields, tall trees and unsecured structures during periods of active convection. Fishermen along the southern coastline have also been cautioned against venturing into the sea amid unsettled weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the national capital received a fresh spell of rain that brought much needed relief from the prevailing heat, with residents reporting a noticeable dip in both temperature and humidity through Tuesday evening. The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky over Delhi for Wednesday, with the maximum temperature expected to hover between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius and the minimum settling in the range of 24 to 26 degrees Celsius.
Weather officials noted that the monsoon has been unusually active this season, with several parts of western and central India recording rainfall well above the seasonal average. While the rains have replenished reservoirs and boosted agricultural activity in several states, authorities have also flagged concerns over localized flooding and waterlogging in low lying urban areas, particularly in cities with ageing drainage infrastructure.
Disaster management authorities in the affected states have been placed on alert, with district administrations directed to keep rescue teams and equipment on standby. Residents in vulnerable areas, particularly those near riverbanks and hill slopes prone to landslides, have been urged to remain cautious and follow official advisories issued through the IMD’s regional centres over the coming days.
