Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday inaugurated ASCEND J&K 2026 at SKICC Srinagar, billed as Jammu and Kashmir’s biggest-ever startup ecosystem summit, urging the region’s youth to pursue innovation fearlessly and stressing that the only genuine failure lies in never attempting to try. Addressing a gathering of entrepreneurs, innovators and investors, the Chief Minister struck an encouraging tone, framing setbacks not as endpoints but as necessary steps on the path to eventual success.
Abdullah told the audience that the summit was designed to bring together ideas, innovation, funding, supportive government policy and market access under one roof, giving entrepreneurs a genuine platform to convert concepts into viable ventures. Invoking the legacy of inventor Thomas Edison, he reminded the gathering that every failure carries within it a lesson that brings innovators one step closer to eventual breakthroughs.
The Chief Minister singled out several homegrown innovations for praise, citing solutions developed by local entrepreneurs for freezing water pipes, smart water management systems, hailstorm protection for orchards and carbon monoxide safety devices. He said these examples reflected the resourcefulness of Jammu and Kashmir’s youth in using technology to address everyday, real-world problems specific to the region’s terrain and climate.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to entrepreneurship, Abdullah acknowledged that not every startup would succeed, but noted that the ones that do have the power to meaningfully transform the local economy. He expressed confidence that the number of startups operating in Jammu and Kashmir, currently estimated between 1,300 and 1,400, would double in the years ahead, and voiced optimism that the Union Territory possesses the raw talent to eventually produce globally recognised entrepreneurs and unicorn companies.
The two-day ASCEND J&K 2026 summit has been organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute under the theme “Where Mountains Meet Momentum.” The event brings together entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers and startup founders from across sectors to promote innovation, investment and collaboration throughout Jammu and Kashmir.
The summit arrives at a moment when the Union Territory’s administration has been actively courting private investment and pushing entrepreneurship as a pillar of economic revival, particularly for a youth population eager for opportunities beyond traditional government employment. Events of this scale also serve a symbolic purpose, signalling to outside investors that Kashmir’s startup ecosystem is maturing and ready for serious capital. With policymakers, mentors and financiers sharing the same stage over two days, organisers hope ASCEND J&K 2026 will translate enthusiasm into tangible, fundable ventures long after the summit concludes.
