India and Israel have concluded the second round of negotiations for their proposed Free Trade Agreement, marking another step toward a comprehensive economic partnership between the two nations. The four day round of talks was held in New Delhi between July 20 and July 23, bringing together technical experts and negotiators from both sides to work through the substantive chapters of the proposed pact.
During the sessions, delegations examined a wide spectrum of issues central to the agreement, including trade in goods, trade in services, rules of origin, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and technical barriers to trade. Discussions also extended to intellectual property rights, customs procedures, trade facilitation, and broader economic cooperation, reflecting the scope of the FTA under negotiation.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry described the talks as constructive and forward looking, noting that both sides engaged in detailed technical deliberations aimed at narrowing differences and identifying common ground. Officials reaffirmed their intent to work toward an early conclusion of a balanced and mutually beneficial agreement that would deepen trade, investment, and economic ties between the two countries.
The negotiations are anchored in the Terms of Reference signed by India and Israel last November, which continues to provide the structured framework guiding talks across all identified areas. That framework has allowed both sides to move methodically through complex trade chapters while keeping the broader goal of a comprehensive agreement in view.
An India-Israel FTA would carry significant implications for bilateral commerce, opening new avenues in sectors ranging from technology and agriculture to pharmaceuticals and defence related trade. Israel has long been a key partner for India in areas such as water management, precision agriculture, and defence technology, and a formal trade agreement is expected to build on this existing relationship by reducing tariff and non tariff barriers.
Trade negotiators from both countries are expected to reconvene for further rounds as they work toward finalising the agreement’s text. The pace and outcome of these negotiations will be closely watched by exporters, investors, and industry bodies in both nations who stand to benefit from expanded access and simplified trade procedures once the FTA is signed and implemented.
