The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit has sharply criticised opposition leaders for sharing a platform with individuals accused of promoting divisive and anti national narratives at a recent protest in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. BJP J&K State Spokesperson Er. Sahil Bashir Bhat said what was billed as a demonstration over the education system instead turned into a platform for political propaganda and inflammatory rhetoric, alleging that the gathering was used to create disorder rather than address genuine concerns.
Bhat said the presence of leaders such as Mehbooba Mufti and Mehraj Malik alongside groups repeatedly linked to anti national narratives exposed what he called the opposition’s willingness to compromise national interest for political gain. He termed such associations irresponsible, warning that they send a damaging message to the public.
Questioning the purpose of the protest, the BJP spokesperson asked why the discourse veered toward provocative slogans rather than substantive discussion on academic reforms, examinations or student welfare. He said chants threatening Parliament and targeting the Prime Minister had no bearing on improving the education system, and demanded that opposition leaders explain the connection between such rhetoric and their stated demand for the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
The party maintained that instead of offering constructive solutions to strengthen the education system, the platform was used to advance a wider political agenda unrelated to education. While affirming that peaceful democratic protest is a constitutional right, Bhat cautioned that such freedoms cannot be used to lend legitimacy to individuals or groups seeking to weaken India’s democratic institutions or foster instability.
He described the events at Jantar Mantar as reflecting a troubling pattern in which sections of the opposition appear more focused on forging alliances with controversial elements than on resolving genuine public issues, calling this approach a form of political opportunism that erodes democratic discourse and public trust.
The BJP reiterated that the unity, sovereignty and integrity of India remain non negotiable, urging all political parties to reject divisive politics, distance themselves from anti national elements and engage in responsible, issue focused democratic debate for the benefit of the people of India.
