Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Shahzad Alam on Monday chaired a high-level meeting of civil administration and police officials to review preparations for the Independence Day 2026 celebrations, setting in motion a coordinated push across departments to ensure the South Kashmir district is fully ready for the national event.
The meeting, held ahead of the August 15 celebrations, saw the Deputy Commissioner review a comprehensive range of arrangements, including security deployment, traffic management, seating for attendees, a full dress rehearsal, venue decoration, cultural programmes, the public address system, power and water supply, transport logistics, sanitation, medical facilities, invitation cards, barricading and parking, reflecting the multi-departmental coordination that large-scale national events of this nature typically demand in Jammu and Kashmir’s district administrations.
Alam assigned specific responsibilities to concerned departments and directed officials to ensure proper coordination and the timely completion of all preparations well ahead of the event date, emphasising that detailed planning at this stage would be critical to avoiding last-minute complications on the day itself.
Stressing the need for thorough groundwork, the Deputy Commissioner instructed departments to complete their assigned tasks in advance and to work in close coordination with one another, so that the celebrations could be conducted in a dignified and organised manner befitting the significance of the occasion.
Among the specific directives issued, Alam asked the Power Development Department and the Jal Shakti Department to ensure uninterrupted electricity and potable water supply at the venue, including keeping water tankers available wherever required as a contingency measure. The Health Department was directed to keep medical teams and ambulances on standby throughout the event, while the Municipal Council was instructed to maintain cleanliness and sanitation in and around the celebration venue.
Security arrangements formed a significant component of the review, given the heightened sensitivity that accompanies Independence Day observances across Jammu and Kashmir, with police officials briefing the Deputy Commissioner on deployment plans aimed at ensuring a secure and incident-free event for the public and dignitaries in attendance.
The Deputy Commissioner reiterated that all departments must efficiently discharge their assigned responsibilities to guarantee the smooth conduct of the celebrations, a message that officials say reflects the administration’s broader emphasis on inter-departmental accountability ahead of major national observances in the district.
