Srinagar, Jul 29: The University of Kashmir has been granted the prestigious UGC Category-I status under the UGC’s Graded Autonomy Regulations, marking a major milestone in the institution’s academic journey and placing it among India’s top-performing universities.
The recognition will provide the University with greater academic, administrative and financial autonomy, enabling it to introduce new academic programmes, strengthen research, expand international collaborations, offer Open and Distance Learning (ODL) courses and engage foreign faculty with greater flexibility. The status follows the University’s outstanding NAAC A++ accreditation with a CGPA of 3.68, the highest in its history.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah congratulated the University on the achievement, describing it as a landmark moment for higher education in Jammu and Kashmir. He said the recognition reflects the University’s sustained academic excellence, research strength and institutional growth, and lauded the contributions of its Vice Chancellor, faculty, students and staff in earning the distinction.
