Launched in 2017, the Khelo India initiative has emerged as a comprehensive national strategy aimed at transforming India’s sporting landscape from the grassroots up, nurturing raw athletic talent while building the infrastructure required to sustain it over the long term.
The programme was conceived with a dual mandate: identify promising young athletes early, often at the school and district level, and provide them with structured training, coaching and financial support to help them progress toward state, national and eventually international competition. At the same time, Khelo India has funded the construction and upgrade of stadiums, academies and training centres across the country, addressing a long-standing infrastructure gap that had held back athletes in smaller towns and rural areas.
Central to the initiative are the Khelo India Games, held annually across school, youth and university categories, which have become a proving ground for thousands of young sportspersons who might otherwise never have had access to competitive platforms. The Games have been credited with widening the talent pipeline feeding into India’s national teams across disciplines including athletics, wrestling, boxing, badminton and archery, among others.
The scheme also runs the Khelo India Athlete Development Programme, which identifies high-potential athletes and places them under dedicated coaching, sports science support and monitoring, mirroring systems used by established sporting nations. Officials associated with the programme have repeatedly emphasised that the goal extends beyond producing Olympic and Asian Games medallists; it is equally about embedding a culture of fitness and sport within Indian society at large.
Jammu and Kashmir has been among the regions to benefit from the Khelo India push, with new sporting infrastructure and athlete support programmes helping local talent gain access to opportunities that were previously concentrated in a handful of metropolitan centres. Officials have pointed to growing participation numbers from the Union Territory in national-level Khelo India events as evidence of the scheme’s reach.
Nearly a decade since its launch, Khelo India is now viewed as one of the central pillars of India’s broader ambition to become a genuine sporting powerhouse, with the government continuing to expand its scope and funding as part of a long-term vision for the sector.
