Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, on Friday called for a collective campaign against moral degradation, drug abuse and other social evils, saying every section of society carries a responsibility to safeguard the moral fabric of the community.
Addressing a large Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid Beerwah in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, the Grand Mufti said religious scholars, families, educational institutions and society at large must work together to confront the growing challenges facing the younger generation. He maintained that remaining silent on issues affecting the community would amount to shirking a shared responsibility, urging worshippers to actively engage in efforts to protect youth from the spread of substance abuse and associated social ills.
Referring to his earlier statements regarding the alleged sale of prohibited meat, specifically pork, in Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam said fresh reports had reached him suggesting that such activities were continuing at a franchise outlet in the Lal Bazar area of Srinagar, an issue that has drawn wider public and trade body attention in recent days.
He urged the concerned authorities to verify the allegations and take appropriate legal action if any violation of the law is established, stressing that swift and transparent action would help reassure the public and prevent similar controversies from recurring in the future.
The Grand Mufti reiterated that his intervention on such matters was guided purely by public concern and emphasised that issues affecting the moral and social well-being of society must be addressed without fear or favour, regardless of the parties or businesses involved.
His remarks come at a time when concerns over drug abuse among Kashmir’s youth have repeatedly featured in public discourse, with religious and civil society leaders periodically calling for coordinated action involving families, educational institutions, law enforcement and community organisations to address the growing challenge.
