India has achieved over 1,000 kilometres of secure quantum communication within just three years, demonstrating progress well ahead of its planned ten-year timeline, Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said while addressing the third India International FinTech Festival in New Delhi.
Dr Singh said India’s FinTech sector has emerged as a critical driver of the country’s broader economic transformation through close collaboration among the banking sector, financial institutions, technology companies and startups. He said the country must build an intelligent, secure and trusted financial ecosystem driven by emerging technologies, adding that the next phase of India’s FinTech growth would be shaped by artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, cybersecurity, blockchain and trusted digital innovation working in tandem.
Referring to India’s technological advancements, the Minister said the National Quantum Mission has positioned the country among a select group of nations investing in quantum technologies across four key verticals, namely quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and quantum materials. He described the rapid progress on secure quantum communication as a significant marker of India’s growing capability in cutting-edge scientific research and its ambition to compete with leading global players in the quantum space.
The Minister’s remarks come amid growing global interest in quantum technologies as a critical layer for securing digital financial infrastructure, communication networks and sensitive data against emerging cybersecurity threats. Officials associated with the National Quantum Mission have previously indicated that achieving long-distance secure quantum communication is regarded as one of the more technically demanding milestones within the mission’s broader roadmap.
Dr Singh’s address at the FinTech Festival placed particular emphasis on the convergence of financial technology and frontier scientific research, positioning India’s quantum advancements as directly relevant to the future security architecture of the country’s digital financial systems. He said sustained investment and collaboration across government, academia and industry would be essential to maintaining the pace of progress achieved so far and to ensuring India remains competitive as quantum technologies mature globally over the coming decade.
