Professionals from Jammu and Kashmir’s Film and Television industry gathered in Srinagar on Thursday to discuss the growing challenges confronting local artists and technical professionals, calling for urgent measures to revive opportunities in the sector.
The meeting brought together actors, singers, writers, producers, directors, technicians and equipment owners. Among those present were Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan, Dr Ayash Arif, Mushtaq Bala and Shahzad Rasool.
Participants expressed concern over the declining role of DD Srinagar and DD Kashir, which they said had historically provided an important platform and source of livelihood for the region’s creative community.
The fraternity said the reduction in commissioning and in-house productions had left many artists and technical workers without regular assignments, despite their long association with television production.
Another key issue was the proposed bidding mechanism for outsourced programmes, including documentaries, travelogues, fiction and musical productions. Participants unanimously opposed the system, arguing that creative production requires professional expertise, artistic merit and broadcasting experience rather than being treated purely as a conventional tendering process.
The gathering decided to take up the matter with the concerned authorities and seek intervention to safeguard the interests of local professionals.
Participants stressed that restoring production and commissioning opportunities at DD Srinagar and DD Kashir could generate employment while also preserving Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural narratives, artistic traditions and local talent.
