United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India during his maiden visit to the Union Territory on Wednesday, crediting the Centre and the local government with significant strides in improving the security situation in the region.

Ambassador Gor’s visit, his first to J&K since presenting his credentials in New Delhi earlier this year, took him to the Chief Minister’s residence in Srinagar, where he called on Omar Abdullah. Describing the meeting as positive, Gor said both sides had identified key follow-up areas to carry forward the bilateral relationship in the months ahead.

Speaking to reporters during a press briefing in Srinagar, the Ambassador touched on one of the more closely watched aspects of Washington’s engagement with the region: the US travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir. While he stopped short of making a formal announcement, Gor said the advisory should be downgraded given the marked improvement in the security environment, an outcome he attributed to the combined efforts of the central and Union Territory governments. He added that a considerable number of American citizens would welcome the opportunity to visit Kashmir, which he called an exceptionally beautiful part of the world.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, for his part, said the discussions centred on the broader India-US relationship and on the specific areas where the United States could deepen its engagement with Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that the conversation was forward-looking, with both sides emphasising positive collaboration rather than dwelling on past friction points.

The visit comes at a moment of renewed momentum in India-US ties, with Gor, who took charge as the 27th US Ambassador to India earlier this year and also serves as Washington’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, having repeatedly stressed the strategic weight India carries in the American worldview. His stop in Srinagar signals that Kashmir, long a sensitive marker of how foreign missions calibrate their India posture, is now being folded more visibly into that engagement.

For Jammu and Kashmir, a downgrade in the US travel advisory would carry tangible economic weight. The Union Territory’s tourism sector has been working to rebuild international footfall, and a formal signal from Washington that the security climate has improved could open the door to greater American visitor and investor interest. Officials in Srinagar are likely to view Gor’s remarks as an encouraging, if preliminary, marker on that front, even as they await a formal policy announcement from the State Department.
