World Senior Citizens Day was observed at the Marriage Hall in Kulgam under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY), drawing a large gathering of senior citizens from across the district for a programme centred on dignity, welfare and access to support services for the elderly.

The event highlighted the importance of recognising the contributions senior citizens have made to their communities and families, while stressing the need to ensure their continued dignity, welfare and overall well-being as they age. Officers and officials of the Social Welfare Department attended the programme and interacted directly with the senior citizens present, using the occasion to raise awareness about the various welfare measures and government initiatives available to support the elderly population of the district.

The gathering also gave senior citizens a platform to voice their concerns and share suggestions directly with the authorities, an exchange organisers say is central to making welfare schemes more responsive to the actual needs of the elderly rather than designed in isolation from their input. Speakers at the event stressed the need for collective efforts, spanning government, families and communities, to ensure senior citizens receive the care, respect and access to services they are entitled to.

The programme concluded with a call to sustain efforts toward building a more supportive and dignified environment for Kulgam’s elderly residents, with officials indicating that similar outreach and awareness programmes would continue under the AVYAY scheme in the district going forward.
