The Income Tax Department has said that more than 6.5 crore Income Tax Returns have already been filed for Assessment Year 2026-27, a tally that includes over 2 crore ITR-3 and ITR-4 filings recorded till Wednesday alone.

The figures point to a strong pace of compliance this filing season, with taxpayers across categories, from salaried individuals to those with business and professional income under ITR-3 and ITR-4, submitting returns well ahead of the deadline. The Department has urged taxpayers who have not yet filed to avoid the last-minute rush, noting that the deadline for filing ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5 and ITR-7 falls before the end of this month, on August 31.

Tax officials have repeatedly cautioned in recent years against delaying filings until the final days of the deadline, when portal traffic tends to spike and technical glitches become more likely, often leaving procrastinating filers scrambling to complete submissions in the closing hours. With just over a week remaining before the August 31 cutoff, the Department’s advisory is aimed squarely at the sizeable pool of taxpayers who have yet to file, encouraging them to complete the process early and avoid the congestion that typically builds as deadlines approach.
