Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha marked Raksha Bandhan on Monday with a warm gathering of schoolchildren at Lok Bhavan in Srinagar, hosting students of Delhi Public School Baramulla ahead of the festival that falls on August 28. The event, held at the Raj Bhavan complex, saw the young visitors tie Rakhis to the Lieutenant Governor in a gesture that blended tradition with the administration’s continuing outreach to the region’s youth.
The students, accompanied by DPS Baramulla Principal Dr Shashwata Shiva along with coordinators and teachers, travelled from Baramulla to Srinagar for the occasion. As they tied the sacred thread, the children exchanged greetings with Sinha, who took the opportunity to speak directly with them about the deeper meaning of the festival.
In his remarks, the Lieutenant Governor urged the students to carry forward the true spirit of Raksha Bandhan by embracing and spreading the values of peace, love, unity and harmony in their daily lives. He reflected on how such festivals, rooted in the idea of protection and familial bonds, carry a wider social message that resonates strongly in Jammu and Kashmir’s diverse and interconnected communities.
Raksha Bandhan, one of India’s most cherished festivals, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters through the tying of a Rakhi, a decorative thread symbolising love and a promise of protection. Its observance across schools and public institutions in the Union Territory has, in recent years, become an occasion for administrators to engage directly with children and reinforce messages of communal harmony.
Monday’s interaction at Lok Bhavan gave the DPS Baramulla students a rare opportunity to engage with the region’s top constitutional authority in an informal, festive setting. Such gestures have become a recurring feature of the Lieutenant Governor’s engagement calendar, reflecting an emphasis on connecting the administration with the state’s youth through cultural and social occasions.
The event passed off warmly, with photographs from the gathering showing the Lieutenant Governor surrounded by uniformed students, several of whom carried gift hampers as mementoes of the visit. Officials from the Raj Bhavan secretariat were also present to coordinate the proceedings.
