External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Sunday, with the discussion centering on key regional and bilateral issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The meeting, held at the Kremlin, formed part of Jaishankar’s engagements in Russia and underscored the continuing depth of India-Russia diplomatic ties even as global attention remains fixed on the Ukraine crisis.

During the meeting, Putin acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s consistent stance on the conflict, noting that he was aware of the Prime Minister’s efforts to push for a resolution through peaceful means. The Russian President also recalled his own past conversations with Modi on the Ukraine situation, remarking that Moscow remains attentive to India’s approach to complex global flashpoints.

The exchange reflects the continued value both countries place on their strategic partnership, with New Delhi having consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the path forward on Ukraine rather than aligning fully with either side in the conflict. India has maintained this balanced position through several rounds of Western pressure since the war began, continuing its energy and defence ties with Moscow while simultaneously engaging with Kyiv and its Western partners.

Putin’s remarks in the Moscow meeting reaffirm that India’s diplomatic posture, one that has often been described as strategic autonomy, continues to register with Russian leadership at the highest level. Jaishankar’s visit adds to a steady rhythm of high level India-Russia exchanges this year, as both nations work to sustain cooperation across trade, energy and defence even amid a shifting global order.

Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs have not yet issued a detailed readout of the meeting beyond the broad themes discussed, though the Moscow visit is expected to feed into preparations for further bilateral engagements between the two countries in the coming months.
