Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday addressed a one-day Education Conference organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Teachers Forum at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar, bringing together educators, researchers and policymakers to deliberate on strengthening teaching and learning outcomes across the Union Territory.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister emphasised the pivotal role teachers play in shaping the future of society and urged them to equip students with the knowledge, values and skills needed to navigate a rapidly changing world and contribute meaningfully to Jammu and Kashmir’s development. He pointed to emerging challenges facing the education sector, including rapid technological change and shifting learning patterns, and stressed the need for educational practices to continuously adapt to contemporary requirements.
Abdullah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the genuine concerns of the teaching community, stating that service-related matters, infrastructure development and quality education remain among the administration’s core priorities. He assured attendees that a supportive environment for teachers would continue to be a focus area of governance going forward.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for School Education Sakeena Itoo outlined a series of measures the government has taken to strengthen the teaching workforce and address longstanding vacancies in the sector. She said 201 postgraduate teachers had been appointed against available vacancies, while 136 senior lecturers have been given charge as in-charge principals, 22 principals as in-charge Chief Education Officers, and 180 teachers as in-charge headmasters.
Itoo further informed the gathering that 594 lecturer posts have been referred to the recruitment board for filling, and that appointment orders for around 500 candidates had already been handed over by the Chief Minister, with the appointees now serving in remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
The conference concluded with a renewed commitment from both the government and the teaching community toward strengthening the education sector, empowering teachers and ensuring quality learning opportunities for students across the Union Territory.
