Anantnag Police have registered a case against an alleged political functionary, Aabid Hussain Nengroo, following a complaint that he collected a substantial sum from a local man on the promise of securing him a Special Police Officer position and permission to install pilgrim tents at Pahalgam during the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
The complaint was lodged at Police Post Khanabal by Waheed Ahmad Itoo, who alleged that Nengroo assured him he could use his political connections to arrange the government job as well as official clearance for setting up tents to serve pilgrims visiting the Yatra route. According to the complaint, Itoo parted with a total of ₹8.25 lakh on the strength of these assurances, believing the promises to be genuine given the accused’s claimed political standing.
Acting on the complaint, Police Station Anantnag registered FIR No. 283 of 2026 under Sections 318(4) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, provisions dealing with cheating and criminal intimidation. Investigators have begun examining the transaction trail and the specific representations allegedly made to the complainant. The allegations against Nengroo remain subject to investigation and eventual judicial determination, and police have not yet disclosed further details of the probe.
The case adds to a pattern of complaints in south Kashmir involving individuals who claim political influence to extract money from job seekers and small contractors hoping to benefit from opportunities linked to the annual Yatra. The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, which draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Pahalgam and the Baltal route each year, generates significant local economic activity, including tent installation, transport and hospitality contracts, making it a recurring target for such fraudulent schemes.
Police officials have in the past cautioned residents against making payments to individuals promising government jobs or official permissions outside formal recruitment and administrative channels, noting that genuine SPO recruitment and Yatra related permissions follow documented, verifiable procedures. Anantnag Police said further investigation into the case is underway, and additional details, including the accused’s custody status and any recovery of funds, are expected to follow as the probe progresses. Residents have been urged to report similar solicitations to the nearest police station rather than making informal payments based on personal assurances.
