The National Institute of Technology Srinagar on Friday launched a three day celebration of National Sports Day 2026, running from August 28 to 30 under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat.” The celebrations, organised in line with the nationwide Fit India Movement under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, mark the annual observance held on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
Friday’s programme featured the “Pass the Ball” and “29 Challenge” activities, which drew wide participation from students and staff members across the NIT Srinagar campus, aimed at promoting physical activity, fitness and team spirit within the institute community. The broader campaign rests on three pillars, described as Tribute, Play and Move, encouraging participants to engage in sports, fitness activities and awareness programmes throughout the three day observance.
Director NIT Srinagar Prof. Anurag Misra, in his message, described sports and physical activity as an integral part of holistic education and urged students to actively take part in the National Sports Day programme, emphasising that regular sporting engagement fosters discipline, teamwork, physical fitness and overall wellbeing. Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman highlighted the importance of building a healthy and active campus environment, noting that initiatives of this kind allow students to balance academic responsibilities with physical activity.
Dr Manoj Kumar, In charge Faculty at the School of Applied Sciences, said the celebrations aim to encourage greater participation in sports and fitness activities among students and staff, urging the institute community to make physical activity a consistent part of daily life. Mrs Kowsar Ali Mir, SAS Officer, said the activities offer an opportunity to bring students and staff together through sport, while Sohail Ahmad Baba, SAS Assistant, underlined how such initiatives promote discipline, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle across the campus.
The event was also attended by Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, Assistant Security Officer, along with SAS staff and students. The programme, driven by the School of Applied Sciences, will continue through August 30 with further sports and fitness related initiatives. The nationwide campaign additionally encourages institutions to organise sports competitions, fitness activities, awareness drives, the “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein” initiative and a special edition of Sundays on Cycle, reinforcing the push for an active and healthy lifestyle across India’s educational institutions.
