A passenger bus overturned on a desert highway in Egypt’s eastern Sinai Peninsula, killing at least twenty-two people and injuring twenty-eight others, in one of the deadliest road accidents to hit the popular tourist corridor in recent years.
The crash occurred on the stretch connecting the Red Sea resort towns of Dahab and Nuweiba in South Sinai, a route frequently used by both domestic travellers and foreign tourists moving between the peninsula’s coastal destinations. Egyptian authorities said the bus was carrying forty three passengers at the time of the accident, a majority of whom were Jordanian nationals travelling through the region.
Ten Jordanian citizens were confirmed among those killed, underscoring the cross-border toll of the tragedy and prompting concern from Jordanian officials monitoring the situation. Egypt’s health ministry revised the death toll upward over the course of the day, raising an earlier figure of sixteen fatalities by six as further details emerged from the crash site and from hospitals treating the injured.
In response to the accident, authorities dispatched twenty ambulances to the scene, with the injured subsequently transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. The scale of the mobilisation reflects the severity of the crash and the logistical challenges of responding to major incidents along Sinai’s sparsely populated desert highways, where medical infrastructure is thinner than in Egypt’s urban centres.
Road accidents remain a persistent hazard in Egypt, where long, poorly lit desert highways, inconsistent vehicle maintenance standards and high-speed intercity travel combine to produce a road safety record that ranks among the most concerning in the region. The Sinai Peninsula in particular, despite its importance as a tourism gateway to the Red Sea coast, has seen a string of serious bus and coach accidents over the years, repeatedly raising questions about oversight of commercial passenger transport on its highways.
The involvement of a large Jordanian contingent among the casualties is likely to draw diplomatic attention, with consular officials expected to coordinate on repatriation and support for affected families. For Egypt, the incident adds to a recurring pattern of scrutiny over road safety enforcement even as the country continues to promote South Sinai’s beach towns as premier destinations for regional and international travellers.
Investigations into the precise cause of the overturning, whether linked to speed, mechanical failure or road conditions, were expected to follow in the coming days.
