Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a telephone call on Wednesday from Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, in a conversation that underscored the steady momentum behind one of India’s most closely watched strategic partnerships in Europe.
The call came in a year of particular significance for the relationship, with India and Germany marking 75 years of diplomatic ties in 2026. During the conversation, Modi and Merz reviewed the progress made under the India Germany Strategic Partnership, taking stock of a relationship that has evolved considerably since diplomatic relations were first established between the two countries.
Both leaders noted the sustained momentum in high level exchanges between New Delhi and Berlin, pointing to a pattern of regular engagement that has kept the partnership active across multiple fronts. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening cooperation across a wide span of domains, including trade and investment, advanced technologies, clean energy, defence, and education and talent mobility, areas that together capture the breadth of what has become a multifaceted bilateral relationship.
Trade and investment ties between the two countries have grown steadily in recent years, with Germany remaining one of India’s most significant European partners on manufacturing, engineering and industrial collaboration. The reference to advanced technologies and clean energy in the leaders’ conversation reflects a relationship increasingly oriented toward future facing sectors, even as traditional areas of cooperation continue to anchor the partnership. Defence cooperation, too, has featured more prominently in recent exchanges between the two governments, alongside growing interest in education and talent mobility as both countries look to deepen people to people links.
Beyond the bilateral agenda, Modi and Merz also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest, a conversation that comes against the backdrop of a shifting international landscape marked by economic uncertainty and geopolitical realignment in Europe and Asia alike. The two leaders agreed to continue working closely together to promote global peace, stability and prosperity, language that reflects a broader convergence between India and Germany on the importance of a rules based international order.
