Srinagar: A one-day national symposium titled “Hamidi Kashmiri: Life and Services” was organised at the University of Kashmir by the Jammu and Kashmir Urdu Council in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, to pay tribute to renowned Urdu writer, critic and former Vice-Chancellor Professor Hamidi Kashmiri.
The inaugural session at Ibn Khaldun Auditorium was addressed by A. R. Hanjura, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Urdu Council. University Registrar Professor Naseer Iqbal was the Guest of Honour, Professor Sharif-ud-Din Pirzada the Chief Guest, and Professor Mohammad Zaman Azurda delivered the presidential address. Abu Zohair Rabbani proposed the vote of thanks.
The academic session was chaired by Syed Hussain Ahmad, with Mohammad Yousuf Shaheen, Professor Abdul Rashid Butt, Professor Nasir Mirza and Javed Matji on the presidium. Deepak Badki, Rukhsana Jabeen, Mushtaq Ahmad Ganai, Shehbaz Haakbari, Abu Zohair Rabbani, Nusrat Jabeen and Riaz Tohidi presented papers on Professor Hamidi Kashmiri’s literary and scholarly contributions.
Speakers highlighted his services to Urdu literature, particularly research, criticism and teaching, describing his intellectual legacy as valuable for future generations.
The concluding “Adabi Forum: Poetry Session”, chaired by poet Rafiq Raaz, featured Satish Vimal, Ashraf Adil, Dr. Shakeel Shafai, Dr. Hafiz Shehnawaz and Kausar Rasool.
The programme began with Quran recitation by Dr. Hafiz Shehnawaz, followed by a devotional poem by students of Iqbal High School, Soura. Javed Matji delivered the concluding remarks, while Javed Kirmani conducted the proceedings.
The symposium was attended by Ejaz Ahmad Kakroo, Saleem Salik, Imdad Saqi, Bilal Farooqi, Shabir Matji, Sufi Ali Mohammad, Dr. Mushtaq Haider, Ibn Shehbaz, Dr. Pir Naseer Ahmad and Professor Bashir Ahmad Shah, besides other writers and literary figures.
