Kashmir’s Mirwaiz joins high-level interaction with President Masoud Pezeshkian on BRICS sidelines; later meets Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and presents a wooden souvenir depicting Srinagar’s historic Jama Masjid
New Delhi, September 12: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr. Molvi Mohammad Umar Farooq met Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian in New Delhi on Friday on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit. The interaction, hosted by Iranian Ambassador to India Dr. Mohammad Fathali, brought together religious leaders, intellectuals, business representatives and other dignitaries.
According to reports, Mirwaiz was among the dignitaries invited by the Iranian Embassy for the interaction at a New Delhi hotel. He also visited an exhibition commemorating the children killed in Minab, Iran, before attending the gathering and dinner hosted by the Iranian Embassy.
Speaking after the interaction, Mirwaiz stressed the need for peace, justice and diplomacy, saying that peace can only be established when there is justice. He also called for an end to wars and greater emphasis on dialogue and human values amid the continuing tensions in West Asia.
On Saturday, Mirwaiz also met Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Seyed Abbas Mosavi Araghchi in New Delhi, along with Aga Syed Hassan Mosavi Al-Safavi and Molana Imran Reza Ansari. During the meeting, Mirwaiz presented the Iranian Foreign Minister with a wood-crafted souvenir depicting the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar.
The meeting with Pezeshkian came hours after the Iranian President held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi and Pezeshkian discussed bilateral relations and recent developments in West Asia, with India reiterating its position that issues should be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy. They also discussed lasting regional peace, freedom of navigation and commerce, and the safety of seafarers.
The meeting was the second interaction between Modi and Pezeshkian in less than two weeks, following their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek on August 31.
