Bangladesh has signalled its intent to reset relations with India, framing the move as a shift toward direct bilateral engagement grounded in mutual interest rather than a continuation of past patterns marked by distance and mistrust, in what amounts to one of the clearest public statements yet on Dhaka’s approach to New Delhi under the current dispensation.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir said Bangladesh is looking to engage India through direct, government-to-government talks rather than depending primarily on multilateral platforms to address matters between the two neighbours. His comments point to a preference for structured bilateral channels over the sidelines diplomacy that has often characterised recent exchanges between the two capitals.
Kobir went further, saying Bangladesh needs to move past what he described as an excessive preoccupation with India, urging instead a relationship built on mutual interests rather than old grievances or reflexive positioning. The remark suggests an attempt within Dhaka’s foreign policy establishment to recalibrate how the country approaches its largest neighbour after a period of strained ties.
Clarifying earlier statements that had drawn attention, the State Minister said his comments on stepping back from multilateral engagement were specifically about the India relationship and should not be read as a broader retreat from regional or international forums. He added that Bangladesh will continue to meet other countries on the sidelines of such gatherings whenever necessary, indicating that the recalibration is targeted rather than wholesale.
The signal from Dhaka comes at a time when India-Bangladesh relations have faced considerable scrutiny following the political transition in Bangladesh, with both sides having navigated a period of recalibrated expectations.
