Geneva: During the 63rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Indian NGO Shivi Development Society delivered an oral statement under Item 3 of the General Debate on civic space and democratic participation. The statement was delivered by Narender Kumar.
The organisation raised concerns over what it described as serious human rights violations and a deteriorating civic space situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK). It alleged that state-led crackdowns and tensions had intensified since June, with the use of force and heavy security measures resulting in civilian casualties.
The statement also alleged restrictions on peaceful protests, human rights defenders and digital freedoms, including censorship and other measures aimed at limiting public dissent.
The NGO further drew attention to economic hardships in the region, including high inflation and unemployment, saying these issues had contributed to growing public discontent.
