Srinagar, Sep 24: Fresh concerns have emerged over the circulation of suspected fake MMTC-PAMP one-gram gold pieces in Srinagar, months after similar allegations were reported in the local market.
According to Asif Ahmad Zarger, a young gold dealer, a Lal Chowk shopkeeper reportedly found around 800 one-gram pieces about eight days ago carrying the same certificate number. Questions have also been raised over their purity, with a reported difference of around 20 points from the stated purity.

Zarger said similar material was reportedly being held by jewellers in Saraf Kadal and Lal Chowk, and urged police and the administration to verify the products, certificates, purity and entire supply chain.
The latest concerns come nearly a year after Onlykashmir.in, on November 20, 2025, reported the alleged circulation of thousands of fake MMTC gold coins in Srinagar markets. That report, based on sources within the gold-jewellery community, stated that around 4,000 one-gram coins had reportedly reached Srinagar from Delhi, with the association terming the coins fake.
Zarger has also recalled the earlier episode, saying the issue was raised with MMTC-PAMP, but alleging that sufficient concrete action was not taken.
The fresh allegations have renewed calls for a thorough investigation, independent purity testing and tracing of the source and supply chain before any conclusion is reached regarding the authenticity of the products.
