A road accident at Seemari in the Karnah area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district has claimed five lives and left several others injured, sending a wave of grief across the frontier district and drawing condolences from religious and political leaders.
Awami Ittihad Party Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, speaking on behalf of the party leadership, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He appreciated the timely rescue efforts by the police and civil administration, along with local residents, and urged the authorities to ensure that every injured person receives the best possible medical treatment without delay.
“The loss of five precious lives is a heartbreaking tragedy. Our deepest sympathies are with the bereaved families. The administration must extend every possible assistance to the affected families and ensure that the injured receive immediate and specialised medical care,” Inam Un Nabi said. He further called for all necessary support to the families of the deceased so that no affected household faces added hardship in the aftermath of the loss, and said the party stands firmly with the people of Kupwara in this difficult hour.
Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Mirwaiz Muhammad Umar Farooq also expressed anguish over the accident in a post on X. He said the growing frequency of road accidents across Jammu and Kashmir is deeply worrying and demands urgent attention to road safety, infrastructure and preventive measures. He extended his condolences to the grieving families, prayed that the departed be granted a place in paradise and that their loved ones be given strength, and wished all those injured a speedy recovery.
The accident once again brings into focus the safety of travel on the roads of Jammu and Kashmir. Much of the Union Territory’s road network winds through mountainous terrain, where narrow stretches, steep gradients and changing weather leave little margin for error. Border districts such as Kupwara, where communities depend heavily on road transport for access to markets, hospitals and schools, feel the consequences of every such incident acutely.
The calls from both leaders point in the same direction: better road engineering, stricter preventive measures and a sustained public safety effort. As the injured receive treatment and families begin to mourn, the immediate priority for the administration remains care for the wounded and support for the bereaved, followed by a serious look at what can be done to prevent the next tragedy on the region’s roads.
