A long-pending public demand in south Kashmir has received a fresh push, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stating that Rs 12.10 crore has been proposed for completing the delayed SRTC Complex in Anantnag.

The announcement has been welcomed by local residents, who say the complex has remained incomplete for a long time and that its completion is an important public need. Residents expressed gratitude to the Jammu and Kashmir Government for taking up the matter and moving towards finishing the project.

The word used is “proposed,” and the distinction matters. A proposal is a step in the process, not a final release of funds, and the money will still need to move through the usual administrative and financial approvals before work can resume. That is why residents, while pleased, have been careful to frame their response as hope rather than celebration. They say they now expect the proposed funding to translate into speedy execution on the ground.

Public buildings that stall midway are a familiar frustration in many towns, and an unfinished transport complex carries a visible cost. A completed SRTC facility is meant to give commuters organised boarding areas, shelter from the weather, and a more orderly arrangement for passenger transport, which is especially valuable in a district headquarters that connects surrounding areas to the rest of the Valley. In winter and during the rains, the absence of such facilities is felt most keenly by daily travellers, students and traders who depend on public transport.

For Anantnag, one of the most populous towns in south Kashmir, the completion of the complex would also matter for local commerce and traffic management, since a functioning terminal can help ease congestion on busy roads. Residents say the project has been awaiting completion for years and that repeated attention to the issue has now helped bring it to the notice of the authorities.

The coming weeks will show how quickly the proposal is converted into sanctioned funds and a work schedule. Residents are looking for clear timelines and early resumption of construction, and they have said they hope the complex will be completed at the earliest for the benefit of the people. For the Government, delivering on the proposal would demonstrate responsiveness to a local demand that has remained unmet for a long time.
