NEW DELHI, October 3: Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is being praised internationally after helping save 174 people aboard a Flydubai flight. Leaders from India, Israel and the UAE have commended his courage and quick thinking.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, visited Captain Machchhar and praised his “courage, responsibility, and care for human life.”
After the visit, Sheikh Hamdan wrote that the UAE was proud to have Captain Machchhar as part of its team and its story. He said the pilot reflected the country’s values of compassion, peace and respect for life.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also spoke with Captain Machchhar. A special event was held in Tel Aviv to honour him and mark the flight’s safe landing.
The recognition follows a conversation between Captain Machchhar and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2. Modi praised his bravery and assured him that the country would support him as he recovers.
A flight in crisis
The incident took place aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board.
About two and a half hours into the flight, the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar in the cockpit, stabbing him and trying to take control of the aircraft.
The plane then plunged nearly 14,000 feet, alarming passengers. Despite his injuries, Captain Machchhar managed to reach the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members were then able to overpower the attacker and regain control of the aircraft.
The plane diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and made an emergency landing. All 174 people survived; some suffered minor injuries.
Courage recognised across borders
Captain Machchhar’s actions helped turn a dangerous crisis into a story of courage and humanity. Praise from Narendra Modi, Benjamin Netanyahu and Sheikh Hamdan reflects how widely his response has resonated.
In the face of grave danger, he put the safety of others first.
