Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the completion of 25 years of what he called Seva and Samarpan, marking the anniversary of the day Mr Modi first took the oath as Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001.

In a series of posts on X, Mr Shah said the Prime Minister’s journey of service, struggle and dedication, spanning his tenures as Chief Minister and Prime Minister, had become synonymous with the welfare of the poor, the empowerment of women, the upliftment of youth and the prosperity of every section of society. Through public welfare policies, effective implementation, decisive leadership, transparency and certainty of results, he said, Mr Modi had redefined governance and established the ideal of the politics of performance.

Recalling the Gujarat years, Mr Shah said Mr Modi rebuilt Kutch after the devastating earthquake into an exemplary region, ensured round the clock electricity to every village through the Jyotigram Yojana, gave a new direction to investment and industry through solar energy and the Vibrant Gujarat initiative, and achieved agricultural growth of over 8 per cent. This, he said, created a model of good governance in the state that later became the foundation for the entire nation.

On the Prime Minister’s national tenure, Mr Shah said the vision had been expanded further, with India achieving new milestones from space to the oceans and from global platforms to internal security. He claimed that 250 million people had been lifted out of poverty and that crores of families had gained permanent housing, health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh, Ujjwala gas connections and tap water at home.

Describing the present position of the country, Mr Shah said India is a fast growing economy scaling new heights in manufacturing, digital payments, start-ups, semiconductors, defence production and renewable energy. At a time of war and instability elsewhere in the world, he said, India has emerged as an important global voice for peace and harmony. By instilling self-confidence in crores of citizens, Mr Modi had given the mantra of a Viksit Bharat and inspired a resolve to make India a leader in every sector by 2047.

Mr Shah described it as a matter of privilege and pride to take part in service initiatives under the Prime Minister’s leadership. The Home Minister is among Mr Modi’s closest political associates, and the two have worked together since their Gujarat days.

The claims made in the message on poverty reduction and growth are those of the Home Minister, and opposition parties have in the past questioned some of them, particularly on employment and inequality. The anniversary is nonetheless certain to remain a central talking point as the government presents its record before the country.
