Four infiltrators, including a senior commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), were killed in a landmine explosion near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Monday. Officials described the incident as the foiling of an attempted cross-border infiltration.
The blast occurred in the Satwal-Naki area of the Krishna Ghati sector, where the group was reportedly trying to cross into Indian territory. All four were killed at the spot, officials said.
The identity of the slain commander and the precise sequence of events are still being verified. After the explosion, security forces stepped up vigilance across the sector. They put precautionary measures in place to assess the situation on the ground and guard against any follow-up attempt to breach the frontier.
The Satwal-Naki stretch is regarded as a traditional infiltration route along the LoC, and armed groups have tried to use it before. Officials also recalled an earlier incident in which six to seven members of Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) were reportedly killed in similar circumstances in the same area.
Poonch lies directly on the LoC and has long been among the districts most exposed to infiltration bids. Its rugged terrain, with thick forest, steep ridgelines and mined stretches along the frontier, makes any crossing hazardous. Security forces maintain a layered grid there, combining physical obstacles, surveillance and troops deployed on the ground.
The Krishna Ghati incident also comes at a time of year when security agencies traditionally remain on heightened alert along the LoC. Infiltration attempts have historically drawn concern in the months before winter snow closes the high-altitude routes. The explosion shows how dangerous such crossings remain for those who attempt them.
Further details, including the identities and affiliations of those killed, are expected once verification is complete. For now, the incident underscores the persistent security challenges along the LoC and the continued vigilance of the forces guarding it.
