A Special Intensive Drive to strengthen electoral rolls across Jammu and Kashmir has drawn more than 17,400 applications in just three days, reflecting active public engagement with the voter enrolment process.

The Election Commission of India is conducting the drive to ensure that every eligible voter in the Union Territory is enrolled in the Electoral Roll. Special outreach is being made to first-time voters, women, persons with disabilities and marginalised communities, groups that often face greater hurdles in registering.

Information shared by the Chief Electoral Officer, J&K, shows that special awareness and enrolment camps are being organised across the Union Territory with the participation of more than 11,860 Booth Level Officers, 90 Electoral Registration Officers, 243 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers and other election personnel. The size of this field machinery shows the scale of the exercise, which relies heavily on booth-level workers who are the first point of contact for citizens.

During the camps held from October 10 to 12, the drive received a total of 8,050 Form-6 applications for inclusion in the Electoral Roll, 3,780 Form-7 applications relating to deletion, and 5,654 Form-8 applications for correction or modification. Together, these figures add up to more than 17,400 applications. They indicate that the exercise is addressing not only new enrolment but also the clean-up of existing entries, which is vital to the accuracy of the rolls.

District Election Officers have been directed to hold all-party meetings at the district and Electoral Registration Officer levels, while booth-level and special camps are being organised to improve coverage. The involvement of political parties in these meetings is meant to build confidence in the process and to help resolve concerns about errors or omissions at an early stage.

The drive also focuses on identifying eligible voters who are yet to enrol. Citizens can submit Form-6 applications throughout the year, as updating of electoral rolls is a continuous process, and the camps are an additional opportunity rather than a deadline. Residents who find errors in their entries or who have shifted residence can use Form-8, while Form-7 deals with deletions.

The initiative reiterates the Election Commission’s commitment to inclusive voter registration and to ensuring that no eligible voter is left out of the Electoral Roll. Accurate rolls remain the foundation of credible elections, and the early response suggests that residents are willing to engage when outreach reaches them directly.
