The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Ward Officer of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, posted at Safakadal, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹10,000 from a resident to allow minor renovation work at the complainant’s house to continue.
According to the agency, a case was registered after a complaint alleged that the officer had demanded ₹10,000 in return for permitting the renovation work to go on. The CBI said it laid a trap on the same day and caught the Ward Officer red-handed while he was allegedly demanding and accepting the money from the complainant. The accused has been arrested, and the agency said further investigation into the case is in progress.
The arrest brings a familiar concern back into focus for residents of Srinagar. Minor repair and renovation work on homes is routinely subject to scrutiny by municipal staff, and residents have often said that such approvals can become a source of harassment. A trap laid on the same day as the complaint shows that the agency acted quickly once the allegation was brought to it.
The case also highlights the importance of citizens coming forward. In cases of this kind, the process generally depends on a complainant who is willing to report the demand to an investigating agency instead of paying. The CBI’s account suggests that the complaint led directly to the operation, though the allegations against the accused will now be tested through the investigation and, in due course, before a court.
As with any arrest in a corruption case, the officer is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the details disclosed so far come from the agency. Further information, including the accused officer’s identity and the stage at which the case may proceed in court, will emerge as the investigation moves ahead.
For the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, the development will add to the public expectation of transparency in civic approvals and permissions. A clear and predictable process for minor works, backed by prompt grievance redressal, is widely seen as one of the best protections against petty corruption. Residents who face a demand for illegal gratification are urged to report it to the relevant anti-corruption agency so that such cases can be dealt with quickly and in accordance with the law.
